The three walk descriptions were
‘A’ Party. Leader – Margaret Bevan. 10 miles How Barrow, Fellend and Hospice This is a figure of eight walk from Cartmel, We leave the racecourse through woods and on to pass Walton Hall on our way to the Hamlet of Howbarrow. We climb to How Barrow 170 metres with wonderful views of the Leven Estuary. We return to Cartmel along the Cumbria Coastal Way, woods and paths. From Cartmel we climb up through the golf course onto Fell End 187 metres. We follow the ridge north to the Hospice and down Hampsfell plantation. We turn west and make our way back across fields and minor roads to Cartmel.
‘B’ Party. Leader – Graham Bevan 7 miles From Cartmel we walk south to eventually cross a golf course and the descend gradually to Grange Over Sands and walk the full length of the promenade. We leave Grange to climb through Eggerslack Wood to reach the Hospice. From the Hospice we walk along the ridge before descending steeply back to Cartmel.
‘C’ Party. Leader – Hilary Turner 6.5 miles This is a pleasant low level walk through open countryside, farms and woodland. Most of it is along well made tracks and across fields with the occasional stretch along narrow country lanes. We leave the car park in Cartmel and follow the Cistercian Way towards Cark, then turn off along the Cumbria Coastal way, climbing gently through woodland towards How Barrow, where we should have wonder4ful views across the bay towards Ulverston. We continue along the Cumbria Coastal way then follow the bridleway to Beck Side, pass through Broughton Hall and Aynsome Manor Hotel, crossing a ford and following the footpath to the lane which takes us back to Cartmel, and that welcome pot of tea.
